Split a 3D model into parts with pins and dowels

Place custom cuts in Splitter, compare joint types, check cut warnings and clearances, export the parts and guide, and save the split model to your Library.

Free video tutorial from Printara Academy, 4 min 19 s. Narration in English, Czech, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, German. No account needed to watch.

Steps

  1. Check the model and the scale. Look for natural seams such as the neck or display base. Open the model in Splitter, check the dimensions and choose the printer profile for your build area.
  2. Draw the cut. Choose Draw a cut, then Exact points. Place points along the seam while rotating the model, and check the highlighted cut surface from the front and back.
  3. Add the cut and choose the joint. Select Add this cut, review the cut list, then choose the joint type and the fit settings.
  4. Run the split. Choose This PC or Printara servers and select Split it. Read the result messages and any cut warnings before exporting.
  5. Inspect the parts and joints. Use Separate to pull the parts apart and check the seams, pins or dowels and wall thickness. After changing the joint, run the split again.
  6. Download and save. Download Every part plus guide as a ZIP, choose Save to my library and reopen the saved split version.

One model. Separate, keyed parts.

0:00 Turn one detailed model into separate parts you can inspect, prepare and assemble. In this tutorial, we will place our own cuts, compare joint types, and save the split result to the Library.

Choose a clear starting image

0:13 You can start with an existing model, or generate one from an image. Here, we choose a detailed creature bust with a clear silhouette. Use your own artwork, or artwork you have permission to use.

Inspect the model before cutting

0:26 Once the model is ready, rotate it and decide where the pieces should meet. Natural transitions, such as the neck or display base, can make useful places to consider a seam. Inspect the geometry, not just the coloured appearance.

Open Splitter and check the scale

0:42 Open the model in Splitter and wait for it to load. Check the dimensions and choose the printer profile that matches your build area. This small bust already fits the bed; we are splitting it for separate preparation and assembly.

Choose how to define the cut

0:56 Splitter offers several ways to define a cut. In this example, choose Draw a cut, then Exact points. This lets you place points directly on the model and turn it as you work around the surface.

Place points along the intended seam

1:09 Place points along the seam you want, rotating the model to reach the other side. Watch the highlighted cutting surface as the points are added. Avoid judging the path from only one angle, especially around narrow or hollow features.

Inspect the highlighted cut surface

1:23 Here, a second cut is drawn around the neck. Check the highlighted surface from the front and back before adding it. The preview helps you plan the split, but it does not replace inspecting the finished parts.

Add the cut before running the split

1:36 Select Add this cut to include it in the operation. Review the cut list, then choose the joint type and fit settings. These settings affect how the separate pieces will connect.

Choose where the calculation runs

1:47 Choose where the calculation runs: This PC or Printara servers. This recording uses This PC. Select Split it and wait for the result. We have shortened the processing waits in this edit.

Read the cut warnings

2:00 Read the result messages before exporting. In this recording, the precise cuts could not separate the geometry, so Splitter used wider cuts. Those cuts may extend beyond the drawn path. Inspect the actual seam and revise it if the result is not suitable.

Separate the parts and inspect the pins

2:17 Use the Separate control to pull the preview apart. With Resin pins selected, the pins belong to one part and the matching sockets are cut into the other. Rotate the result to check the seam, pin positions and surrounding wall thickness.

Choose the joint for your workflow

2:32 The joint menu also offers loose dowels, square keys, cone joints and other options. Choose the connection that suits the model and your process. Changing the setting alone does not rebuild the result; run the split again.

Check the rebuilt result and report

2:47 The rebuilt example uses loose dowels with sockets on both sides. Read the report to see how many dowels were created and how they connect the seams. Check the fit allowance for your printer and material, and test a joint before committing to a full print.

Download the parts and assembly guide

3:02 When the result is suitable, download Every part plus guide as a ZIP archive. Read the included instructions and inspect the individual files in your slicer. Check scale, orientation, supports and the joint surfaces before printing.

Save the split version to your Library

3:18 Also choose Save to my library. Wait for the upload to finish before leaving the page, then reopen the saved split version. This is the version you will use for further presentation or a listing.

Verify the saved parts and appearance

3:30 Back in the Library, check the saved model and its separate parts. In this example, the textured appearance is also visible. Use the separation control to inspect the saved result, rather than assuming that the original unsplit model was updated.

Create and review product visualizations

3:46 You can now create product visualizations from the saved model. Compare each generated image with the actual geometry and selected finish. A good-looking photo is presentation material, not proof of print quality or a tested joint.

Check the public listing before sharing

4:02 If you prepare a listing, review its title, images and included files, and only sell work you have the rights to sell. Open the public page to check what a buyer will see. Plan the cut, inspect the result, save it, and verify the files before printing.

Questions about this tutorial

Which joint types does Splitter offer?

The tutorial shows resin pins, loose dowels, square keys and cone joints, among other options. Changing the joint setting alone does not rebuild the result; run the split again.

Why can the cut differ from the line I drew?

When precise cuts cannot separate the geometry, Splitter can use wider cuts that may extend beyond the drawn path. Read the warnings, inspect the actual seam and revise it if needed.

What is in the download?

Every part plus guide is a ZIP archive with the separate parts and the assembly instructions. Inspect each file in your slicer before printing.

Does splitting update my original model?

Save the split version to your Library and reopen it. The tutorial checks the saved result rather than assuming that the original unsplit model was updated.

Is this tutorial available in other languages?

Yes. The narration is available in English, Czech, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and German, with a transcript of each version. The recorded Printara interface stays in English.
