Browser Mold Makers Compared: Meshcast, MoldStudio3D, Mold Studio and Printara (October 2026)
If you want to turn an STL into printable mold parts without CAD, four browser tools come up again and again: Meshcast, MoldStudio3D, Mold Studio and the Printara Mold Maker. They overlap a lot. They differ in the details that decide your weekend: what you can download for free, which mold types each one builds, where your file is processed, and whether you may sell what you cast.
Two of the names are easy to mix up: MoldStudio3D (moldstudio3d.com) and Mold Studio (moldstudio.app) are different products from different makers.
Disclosure. We make Printara, one of the four tools compared here. Read the tables with that in mind. Every row is taken from each vendor's own public pages, read on 11 October 2026 and linked in the sources. "Not stated" means we could not find it on those pages, not that the feature is missing. These products change quickly, so check the vendor's site before you pay. If something here is out of date, email hello@printara.co and we will correct it.
Short answer. To make a mold in the next ten minutes without signing up, start with Mold Studio: its box and form-fitting molds need no account. For candles, soap, concrete and other crafts on a hobby budget, Meshcast has a generator for each job and a free allowance of 3 downloads a week. If you want to design the product and its mold in one place, or you slip-cast ceramics, look at MoldStudio3D. The Printara Mold Maker fits figures and busts cast in silicone inside a printed shell, with a choice of closures, a hardware list and casting steps in the download, and every mold type free when you build it on your own computer.

Where each tool is ahead
Meshcast
Meshcast is built the other way round from a studio: one focused generator per craft, with defaults for that material, from candles and soap to concrete planters, plaster slip casting, press molds and trays. Its free allowance is larger than MoldStudio3D's (3 downloads a week against 3 Block-mold downloads a month), it has a free library of 663 ready-made mold files, more than 70 guides and five languages. The trade-offs: free downloads are for personal use and carry a small engraving, and selling what you cast needs Pro or Founder.
MoldStudio3D
MoldStudio3D is one studio with 8 mold systems and 11 product designers, so you can design a candle, planter, vase, cup or stamp and its mold in the same place. It covers ceramic slip casting and planters with an interior core, processes geometry with a local kernel, and has presentation tools (360 images, orbit video, AR sharing) for sellers. The trade-offs: the free Maker plan is tighter, and silicone, Skin and ceramic downloads need Pro.
Mold Studio
Mold Studio is the only one of the four that lets you download a mold without any account: upload an STL and download two halves with registration keys and a pour spout. It repairs non-manifold meshes, builds inner cores for hollow casts and shows the silicone volume in cm³ and grams. Paid coins are one-time packs rather than a subscription. The trade-offs: STL only, fewer mold types, and silicone mold downloads cost a coin.
Printara Mold Maker
The Printara Mold Maker puts eight mold types in one tool, from an adaptive shell with a fill port in the base to trays with up to 36 cavities, press molds and vessels with a core, and every type is free when it is built on your own computer. Shells close with bolts, spring clamps, clips or bands, and every download includes a README with print settings and casting steps plus a report of volumes, air pockets and the hardware to buy. Saved sets go to your Library and can be listed on the Printara marketplace. The trade-offs: you need a Printara account before the editor opens, it takes STL only, it does not do ceramic slip casting, and it has no free library of ready-made molds on the scale of Meshcast's.
Which one for which job
| Job | Good starting points |
|---|---|
| A first mold in the next ten minutes, no account | Mold Studio |
| Candles, soap, bath bombs, concrete on a hobby budget | Meshcast; MoldStudio3D if you also want to design the piece |
| Ceramic slip casting | MoldStudio3D, Meshcast |
| Designing the product and its mold in one place, with shop renders | MoldStudio3D |
| A figure or bust in silicone inside a printed shell | Printara Mold Maker (adaptive shell), Meshcast (hugging shell) |
| Resin poured from the bottom through a port in the base | Printara Mold Maker (fill port in the base) |
| Many small copies from one pour | Meshcast (tray mold), Printara Mold Maker (tray, up to 36 cavities) |
| Concrete or plaster planters with a core | Meshcast, MoldStudio3D, Mold Studio, Printara Mold Maker |
| No printer, or you want it made for you | Printara Atelier in Prague |
Whichever tool builds your parts, the silicone side of the job is the same: read How to make a silicone mold from an STL for thickness, vents, silicone volume and the pour.
Five things to check before you pay
- Which mold types the free plan downloads. On MoldStudio3D the free downloads are Block molds; on Mold Studio the silicone mode costs a coin; on Meshcast every type is included in the weekly allowance; on Printara every type is free when built on your own computer.
- Whether you may sell the casts. Meshcast needs Pro or Founder, MoldStudio3D includes commercial-use rights with Pro and Ultra, Printara does not claim ownership of your uploads, and Mold Studio's pages do not say.
- Marks on the files. Free Meshcast STLs carry a small engraving; MoldStudio3D's Maker plan puts a watermark on previews, images and video.
- Where your file goes. MoldStudio3D uses a local kernel, Meshcast runs most tools in the browser and some on its server, Mold Studio stores uploaded files only to generate the mold, and Printara builds on your own computer whenever it can, using its servers only for a paid server build.
- The real silicone cost. In our worked example, a shell that follows the master needed about a third of the silicone of a box for the same master, and silicone usually costs more than the filament.

Is there a free STL to mold generator?
Yes, all four tools in this comparison have a free option, with different limits, as of October 2026. Meshcast: 5 downloads in the first week, then 3 a week, for personal use. MoldStudio3D: 3 Block-mold downloads a month on the free Maker plan. Mold Studio: box and form-fitting molds without an account. Printara Mold Maker: every mold type is free when it is built on your own computer.
Which browser mold maker works without an account?
Mold Studio lets guests generate and download its box and form-fitting molds without an account. Meshcast lets you design and preview without signing in but needs a free account to download. MoldStudio3D lets you open the studio with your own file without an account, and downloads come with a free Maker account. The Printara Mold Maker needs a free Printara account.
Which tools make a shell that follows the model instead of a box?
All four: Meshcast has a hugging shell in 2 to 4 pieces, MoldStudio3D a contour-following Skin mode whose download needs Pro, Mold Studio a form-fitting option, and Printara an adaptive shell with a base plate and 2 to 4 wedges.
Can I sell what I cast from these molds?
On Meshcast, selling physical prints and casts needs Pro or Founder, and the files themselves may never be resold. MoldStudio3D includes commercial-use rights in Pro and Ultra. Mold Studio's pages do not say. Printara does not claim ownership of what you upload, and listing mold files on the Printara marketplace needs a paid creator plan.
What does the Printara Mold Maker cost?
A mold built on your own computer is free, and so are saving it and downloading the parts. A build on Printara servers costs 10 to 30 credits, depending on the mold type, and the Build button shows the price before it starts. New accounts start with 0 credits.
Is this comparison neutral?
No comparison written by one of the vendors is fully neutral. Printara makes one of the four tools, so every row is taken from each vendor's own public pages, dated, linked, and the places where the other tools are ahead are listed. Corrections are welcome at hello@printara.co.
